The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation is a private institution whose fundamental purpose is to improve people’s quality of life through art, charity, science, and education. The Foundation carries out its activities from its headquarters in Lisbon and its branches in Paris and London.

The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum is home to one of the most important private art collections in the world, assembled by Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian during his lifetime, with art works spanning five thousand years of art, from Ancient Egypt to the 20th century. In addition to the Collection, the Gulbenkian Museum organises temporary exhibitions and other activities such as guided tours, workshops, conferences and more.

We are looking to expand the Museum’s team with a Museography Technician, who will be responsible for ensuring the correct and efficient handling, assembly, and maintenance of works of art in the reserves and exhibitions, ensuring compliance with the safety and quality standards and rules in force at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

Main responsibilities

Handling of works of art

Ensure that works of art are handled whenever requested, in accordance with the standards and safety rules in force.

Reserves and collections

Maintaining the Reserves and Collections, handling them and organising them in such a way as to ensure that the items are accessible and in the correct location, always respecting safety regulations for their best preservation.

Supporting conservation

Supporting conservators and researchers in the study of the works, collaborating, whenever necessary, in the movement and localisation of works of art.

Packaging

Preparing the items for loan, packing them, or helping to pack them in accordance with the rules and regulations in force, so as to preserve the condition of the item at all times and transport it safely.

Temporary exhibitions

Preparing the objects for presentation in the exhibitions, collecting all the materials needed to set up the temporary exhibitions, ordering materials and creating exhibition media, whenever necessary, and realising and installing the objects in the exhibitions, ensuring compliance with all quality and safety rules and standards.

Installation and removal of items from the collection

Carrying out the installation and removal of items from the permanent exhibition, in accordance with the procedures and standards in force, guaranteeing the levels of quality and safety envisaged.

Training

Ensuring that trainees are trained and monitored, facilitating their integration into the team, and ensuring that they have all the information/support they need to carry out their activities..

Required skills

  • Degree in Sculpture, Equipment Design, Art History or Museography;
  • Minimum 2 to 3 years’ experience in a similar role;
  • Excellent skills in the maintenance of works of art, preventive conservation, as well as technical mastery of the works of art;
  • Rigour and attention to detail, good communication skills, time management and proactivity;
  • Proficiency in written and spoken Portuguese and English.
