The Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian is a centre for art and culture that houses the largest collection of Portuguese modern and contemporary art to date. With a renovated building and a new extension of its Garden, CAM’s mission is to harness the transformative power of art to promote both social and individual change.

We are looking for a Museography Technical Assistant to join the Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian team, who shall take responsibility for ensuring the correct and effective movement, setting up and maintenance of art works in reserves and exhibitions, ensuring compliance with the safety and quality standards and rules in force at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

Main Responsibilities

  • Ensure that the movement of works of art is carried out whenever requested, in accordance with the standards and safety rules in force.
  • Ensure the organisation and maintenance of Reserves, carrying out the movements of the Collection, plus all the required arrangements in order to ensure that all works are accessible and in the right location, always complying with all safety standards for their best preservation.
  • Ensure the practical implementation of the preventive conservation schedule. Carry out a survey of all materials required for the preventive conservation of all works of art, ordering the necessary materials whenever required.
  • Support curators and researchers in the study of art works, whenever required, namely when moving and locating works of art.
  • Prepare the art works to be lent, carrying out or supporting their packaging in accordance with the standards and rules in force, in order to always preserve the condition of the piece of art work and its safe transportation.
  • Prepare the art works for being displayed at exhibitions, ensuring operations such as assembling hinges, passepartouts and framing.
  • Carry out a survey of all the materials required for setting up temporary exhibitions, placing orders for materials and constructing exhibition supports, whenever required, plus installing works of art at exhibitions, ensuring compliance with all quality and safety rules and standards.
  • Take responsibility for receiving, packaging and identifying new acquisitions for the Collection.

Required Skills

  • Graduate degree in Fine Arts, Sculpture, Equipment Design, Museography, Conservation or similar areas;
  • Minimum 2 to 3 years’ experience in similar responsibilities;
  • Excellent skills in terms of maintenance and preventive conservation of works of art, as well as technical mastery of the various items;
  • Strictness and attention to detail, plus good communication, time management, and proactivity skills;
  • Good command of written and spoken Portuguese and English language.
