The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation is a private institution whose fundamental purpose is to improve people’s quality of life through art, charity, science, and education. The Foundation operates from its headquarters in Lisbon and its branches in Paris and London.

The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum houses one of the most important private art collections in the world, gathered during Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian’s lifetime, with works that span five thousand years of art, from Ancient Egypt to the 20th century. In addition to the Collection, the Gulbenkian Museum organizes temporary exhibitions and other activities such as guided tours, workshops, conferences, among others.

We are looking to enhance the team at the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum with a Curator, who will be responsible for ensuring the activities associated with the documentation of the collection, supporting the team of Curators in the production and realization of temporary exhibitions and curatorial projects.

Contractual Conditions: Employment contract without a fixed term.

Main responsibilities

Documentation and study of the collection

Supporting all aspects related to the documentation of the collection. Study the works of art in the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum’s collection under their responsibility
Developing and producing content that promotes knowledge about the Ancient Art collection (e.g. publications, audio guides, various documents, courses, lectures, etc.), with a view to providing the public with clear and revealing information about the works and the collector.

Conservation and restoration

Ensuring the physical integrity of the works of art, making sure that all the necessary conditions (physical and environmental) are met, both when they are at the Foundation and when they are on loan to external entities..

Exhibitions

Cooperating in the conception, planning and operationalization of the activities inherent to holding exhibitions, ensuring articulation and communication with various areas and partners, with a view to carrying them out within the deadlines set and with the required quality standards.

Loans of Works of Art

Analysing loan requests, providing an opinion and monitoring the movement of works of art on loan to external entities, including courriers, ensuring that all the conditions necessary for their preservation and conservation are met.

Required skills

  • Degree and Master’s in Art History, Museum Studies or similar (Doctorate preferred)
  • Minimum experience of 4 years in similar functions
  • Good skills in collection management, research methods and information management, as well as exhibition planning
  • Good communication, planning and organization skills, as well as rigor and autonomy
