This call supports advanced scientific fellowships at higher education institutions in Portugal, aimed at lecturers who are nationals and residents of the Portuguese-speaking African countries (Angola, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe).

The programme is designed to support the development or consolidation of research in Mathematics and Physics, while strengthening participants’ scientific and teaching capacities.

The internships are carried out in person at Portuguese institutions and last up to three months.

Up to 15 fellowships will be awarded: 10 in Mathematics and 5 in Physics. The call is organised into two groups: Group 1, for lecturers holding a Master’s degree, and Group 2, for those holding a PhD.


Conditions

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation provides:

  • A monthly allowance of €1,500 to cover living expenses during the fellowship (for up to three months).
  • Return travel between the country of origin and Portugal, up to €800 (Cabo Verde and Guinea-Bissau), €1,200 (Angola, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe); for lecturers living and working outside the provinces of Luanda, Bengo, Icolo e Bengo, Cuanza Norte or Benguela (in Angola), and Maputo or Sofala (in Mozambique), the maximum travel support is €1,350.
  • Travel and personal accident insurance, arranged by the Gulbenkian Foundation.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Hold at least a Master’s degree (Group 1) or a PhD (Group 2) in Mathematics, Physics or a related field.
  • Be employed by a higher education institution in a PALOP country.
  • Have teaching and research experience in Mathematics or Physics.
  • Provide prior authorisation from their home institution to undertake the internship.

Faq

Who is eligible to apply?

Applications may be submitted by higher education lecturers, nationals and residents of a PALOP – Portuguese Language Speaking African Country (Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique, Sao Tome and Principe), who wish to undertake an advanced scientific internship at university institutions and research centres in Portugal with the purpose of beginning or consolidating their research activities in the fields of either Mathematics or Physics.

Applicants should, at the least, hold a Master's Degree. Applicants holding Doctoral Degrees are also eligible for this tender.

The maximum number of internships receiving support, for both Master's Degree and Doctoral Degree holders, is 15 with 10 in the field of Mathematics and similar and 5 in the field of Physics and similar.

May I apply while residing in Portugal in 2026?

No. Only applications from candidates residing in their countries of origin are eligible.

How do I apply?

What documents do I need?

The documents required to submit your application are the following:

  • your updated curriculum vitae
  • A copy of your academic qualifications that are necessarily in the fields of Mathematics or Physics or their associated fields and at either the Master's Degree or Doctoral Degree levels.
  • Declaration from the higher education institution where you work, detailing your position and type of application (specifically whether full- or part-time) and authorising your attendance of an internship during the second half of 2026 and/or, exceptionally in the first quarter of 2027. This declaration is to be signed by the head of the department in which the candidate works and stamped with the host institution seal, digitalised and uploaded on the application platform in conjunction with the other documents.

How may I find out which internship themes and locations are available?

The locations for the internships and the respective Mathematics or Physics scientific fields, in conjunction with the respective supervisors, are listed in a document available on the application webpage.

Applicants may select only one internship option.

I work in a private Higher Education Institution. Am I eligible for this tender?

Yes. Members of staff working in the private sector may apply despite applications from lecturers and researchers working in the public sector being valued higher.

I have already been a Foundation grant holder. Am I eligible for this tender?

Yes. Past grant holders in this or another tender may also apply.

However, you are not eligible when having already received a study grant supported by the Gulbenkian Foundation for 2026.

I am a student. Am I eligible for this tender?

Only when a student on a post-graduate program in the fields of Mathematics or Physics (Doctoral Degree) in employment at a higher education institution. In this case, and when holding a Master's Degree, you are eligible to apply to the candidate group with the Master's Degree level.

Does the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation provide my accommodation in Portugal?

No.

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation provides a monthly grant with the amount of 1,500 Euros to meet the costs of accommodation and living in Portugal.

The Foundation also covers costs with the visa and return air travel to either Lisbon or Oporto up to a maximum amount of 800 Euros (Cape Verde and Guinea Bissau) or 1,200 Euros (for Angola, Mozambique and Sao Tome and Principe) as well as ensuring travel and personal accident insurance.

In the case of candidates residing and working in Angola or Moçambique in provinces where there is no Consulate of Portugal and with the purpose of supporting the travel costs for obtaining visas, the level of support for the air transport rises to a maximum of 1,350 Euros.

The Gulbenkian Foundation holds no responsibility for either welcoming the grant holders at the airport or in securing accommodation, which remain entirely the responsibility of grant holders.

Under the Foundation insurance coverage, do I have access to healthcare services?

The grant holder insurance only covers medical costs incurred due to a personal accident and therefore not covering the costs of either routine medical appointments or previously diagnosed conditions (chronic diseases, for example).
