This grant aims to support postgraduate courses offering solid technical and scientific training in clinical and translational research areas that are relevant to the national or regional context and priorities. Examples include: foundations of research and clinical trials, scientific evidence in clinical practice, pharmacology and drug development, disease control and applied research, innovation and technology in clinical research, development of clinical protocols, and pharmacovigilance.

Course modules must be delivered by a faculty with recognised technical and scientific merit, either in person or remotely, with a preference for blended learning formats. Courses should provide clear specialisation in a specific area and have a minimum duration of 180 hours (one academic semester).

Eligibility Criteria

Higher education institutions in the PALOPs, Portuguese Language African States – whether public or private non-profit entities – with at least 10 years of teaching activity and an academic department in medicine or health sciences.

Institutions may apply individually or in partnership with other higher education institutions, including Portuguese ones.

Applications will be evaluated by an external panel based on the following criteria:

  • Assessment of the course curriculum;
  • Academic CVs of the teaching staff;
  • Integration of the course within the institution’s wider academic offer and its relevance to national training needs;
  • Provision of complementary activities to enrich the curriculum.

The terms and conditions for awarding the support will be subject to a Financing Protocol signed between the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the proponent institution. The applications approved receive a period of three months following notification of support to begin publicising the course, which is to begin within a period of six months following support approval.

The grant will be formalised through a Funding Agreement between the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the applying institution. Once approved, the institution will have three months to announce the course, which must begin within six months.
