Walk, Listen, Explore, is a sensory tour that explores the sounds and biodiversity of the Gulbenkian Garden. Inspired by Pauline Oliveros' Deep Listening concepts and Hildegard Westerkamp's work on soundscapes, this activity promotes an immersive and reflective experience of active listening.

Participants are invited to listen to the constantly changing sounds in the Garden, noticing the interaction between natural and urban elements. Along the way, they will identify and register the sounds they encounter, creating a sound map that documents the acoustic landscapes of the Garden. Additionally, a Flora Hunt, inspired by Progetto Fiori, participants will be able to document the plant species, encouraging reflections on the symbiotic connection between plants and sound. The walk ends at the south lake, where an underwater listening session will be held, revealing the subtle sounds of the aquatic environment. This moment offers a new perspective on the sound dimensions of ecosystems, promoting a reconnection with natural elements.

This initiative combines art, science and ecology, raising awareness among participants about the importance of soundscapes and the impacts of environmental changes on our daily lives. It is a unique opportunity to rediscover our relationship with sound and nature, promoting a sensorial, critical and emotional experience in the Garden.

Integrated in the Artistic and Scientific Residency A CALL TO THE SEA, within the scope of the European project “Bauhaus of the Seas Sails”, this initiative is carried out in partnership with CAM – Centro Gulbenkian de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian, the Municipality of Oeiras and Vasco da Gama Aquarium. The activity promotes the convergence of art, science and environmental awareness, encouraging a new understanding of ecological soundscapes and inviting reflection on the human impact on ecosystems.
