by Susana Neves, ethnobotanical researcher

Account of the visit made by the renowned French botanist Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656- 1708) through the lands of Armenia based on his “Relation d`un Voyage du Levant: fait par ordre du Roy…”, an artistic work of Oriental inspiration published three centuries ago and one of the rarities available in the reserve collection of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Art Library. This travel account makes recourse to some of the images that appear in the Tournefort book, to iconography relating to the plants and to the items of Armenian clothing worn in that period.
