Event Slider

On this visit, Patrícia Simões, assistant curator at the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum presents a comprehensive overview of this portrait, which the Museum is hosting for the fifth edition of the ‘Visiting Artwork’ initiative.

During his time as official painter of the Spanish court, Diego Velázquez forged a very close relationship with Philip IV of Spain. The portrait of this monarch, belonging to the Frick Collection, in New York, served as an affirmation of his military power, prompting the observer to reflect on the artist’s role in the construction and assertion of the symbolic image of the king.
