The work of CAM

Event Slider

While the giant canopy along the entire south façade of the building, establishing a scenic link with the garden, is the iconic element of the project, there are many other invisible components that we will discover through the words of the many collaborators on this complex work and project, over the course of this cycle of visits.

In 2019, after the Foundation acquired a plot of land between the Centro de Arte Moderna and Rua Marquês de Fonteira, a competition was launched to find ideas to extend the Garden and renovate the Centro de Arte Moderna.

The competition programme included the remodelling of the CAM building, adapting it to its new central position, the creation of a revitalised image in harmony with the garden, and the extension of the exhibition area.

The proposal by architect Kengo Kuma, along with landscape architect Vladimir Djurovic, stood out for its sensitivity, respect for what was already there and for its striking appearance.

Programme

10 Oct / A poetic encounter between cultures

Rita Topa is a Portuguese architect who has been based in Japan since 2010, and is a partner of Kengo Kuma & Associates. She was the director, on behalf of the Japanese studio, of the remodelling project for CAM. On this visit, she will guide us through the original idea for this challenge, the most significant aspects and the greatest limitations in developing the idea, and on bringing together two cultures, clearly visible in the relationship between building and garden.

17 Oct / An urban wood for immersion in nature

Federico Arrieta, an architect from Asturias, Spain, has worked for 19 years in the Lebanese studio VDLA. He was the director of the landscape architecture project for the extension of the Garden. Today, he will guide us through the garden, and tell us about the key aspects that informed the idea of ‘an urban wood for natural life’ and the importance of the original garden for constructing an ‘activist’ concept of the urban garden.

24 Oct / Discover the value of native plants

Pedro Arsénio and Filipe Soares are both landscape architects. The former, a teacher at ISA, was a project consultant for the list of vegetation; the latter, who runs a plant nursery, was in charge of the advance propagation of the thousands of plants of different species of Portuguese flora that were planted in this space. This was no easy task, given that some of these species had never been propagated in a nursery, but it was certainly challenging and stimulating!
