The Selva is a trio that brings together three of Portugal’s most original and creative musicians – Ricardo Jacinto on cello and electronics, Gonçalo Almeida on double bass and electronics, and Nuno Morão on drums and percussion. Between the three of them, there are evocations of Eastern classical music and early Western music, motifs from traditional sub-Saharan music, rarefactions of blues and jazz, in a singular search for beauty that doesn’t get caught up in the usual meshes. You could say that The Selva is chamber music in total freedom and with hypnotic potential. On the Free Jazz Blog, Paul Acquaro described “the slow build-up of musical moments” on the latest album “Camarão-Girafa” as “gripping and demanding repeated listenings”. A mystery that hesitates admirably between hiding and revealing itself.
