What are diatoms? Where do they live? What do they look like? And what’s their “superpower”? Together we’ll explore these fascinating organisms, starting with a search for them in the garden of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. We’ll then examine them under the microscope, discover the amazing geometric patterns they form and learn how they can transmit light.

Diatoms are microscopic algae encased in beautiful, glass-like silica shells. These tiny organisms are essential to aquatic ecosystems, producing about 40% of the oxygen we breathe. By blending scientific exploration with artistic creativity, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to deepen our understanding of these incredible creatures. It also stimulates thoughtful discussion about the use of diatoms in art and raises important ethical considerations about the role of living organisms in creative processes.
