In this talk, José Eduardo Franco, Aida Sampaio de Lemos, and Guilherme d’Oliveira Martins discuss the remarkable figure of Fernão Oliveira (1507-ca.1585), a humanist and polymath of the 16th century, a unique character from the age of exploration.

Notable works include his “Nautical Art,” “History of Portugal,” and “Book of the Antiquity of the Kingdom,” the latter two written in the context of the political and dynastic crisis of 1580, on the eve of the establishment of the Philippine dynasty.
