In this workshop, we will explore Atkins’s work and the plant life of the Gulbenkian Garden.

In 1843, just four years after the invention of photography was announced, Anna Atkins published the first instalment of her British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions. In it, the artist–botanist used cyanotype to record every known species of algae from the British Isles. It was the first book illustrated entirely with a photographic process—an effort to show that photography could be both scientifically valuable and aesthetically appealing—and is now considered a landmark in the history of photography.

Sun Gardens is the title of the first monograph devoted to Anna Atkins’s cyanotypes, firmly establishing her place among the pioneers of photography.

Using cyanotype process, in which a light-sensitive chemical mixture produces deep blue images when exposed to sunlight, we will create our own small botanical albums of blue impressions: our very own sun gardens.

Activity subject to atmospheric conditions, to ensure an adequate level of UV radiation.

Duration: 90 min. Participants: 10 – 20 Language: Portuguese
