Originally conceived as a piece for piano and orchestra – in which Stravinsky imagined an infuriated puppet to which the orchestra would reply with menacing fanfares, in a fight where the first one would always be in disadvantage – the idea would eventually become a ballet in 4 parts, in a response to a commission by Sergei Diaghilev, delaying the conclusion The Rite of Spring, which Stravinsky had already initiated.
