Cocina Aural (Auditory Cooking)

Documentary / 19 min. / 2022 / Spain

Cocina Aural is a cultural project that combines sound creation and gastronomy, inviting visually impaired people to explore new tools and avenues of expression using hearing and the culinary arts as the basis for artistic creation. Building on the experiments and auditory recipes resulting from the workshops held as part of the project, the participants bring their newly acquired knowledge into their homes, where they put everything they have learned into practice, empowered to innovate and experiment and involving their families in the process.

This documentary follows the individual processes, reactions and interactions of the participants during the workshops, demonstrating how this experience gave them the chance to explore a dimension – sound – from another point of view, not as a mere aid, but as material and content to go about their daily lives in a different way.

Cocina Aural was one of the 19 projects selected by the Art for Change 2020 initiative of the “la Caixa” Foundation (Spain). Implemented in Lucena (Córdoba, Spain), the project involves 15 people of different ages, backgrounds and locations in the region, and with varying degrees of visual impairment (from total blindness to other types of visual impairment).

Through a series of workshops and using a participatory methodology, project participants created their own auditory recipes, transforming the kitchen into an artistic composition lab. The works will be included in a collectively created vinyl record (currently being produced), the format, content and design of which were also decided by the participants.

Cocina Aural aims at showcasing the creative work of visually impaired people, encouraging their participation as creative agents in the local cultural fabric, and breaking down stereotypes surrounding the group.

En mi piel (In my skin)

Non-fiction / 14 min. / 2022 / Spain

In a pluralistic and diverse society, we are often subjected to the tyranny of homogenising parameters. In contrast, Flamenco uses the subversive power of the arts to empower diverse bodies on stage. Disability is no longer a limitation, but a creative starting point.

En mi piel is a video-dance performance in short film format, created by people with different abilities, aimed at giving visibility to diverse bodies on stage.

Selected under the Art for Change 2021 initiative by the “la Caixa” Foundation (Spain), this innovative inclusive Flamenco proposal is part of a choreographic research project carried out by José Galán, who explores new body movements and dance moves adapted to the diversity of bodies and the pace of an individual’s body language to tap the full artistic potential of this authentic dance.
