Rediscovering CAM: The transformation of Kuma and Djurovic

Cartão Gulbenkian Mais programme

In 2019, following the Foundation’s acquisition of a plot of land between the Modern Art Center and Rua Marquês de Fonteira, a call for ideas was launched for extending the Garden and renovating the Modern Art Center. The competition program included refurbishing the CAM building, adapting it to its new centrality, creating a renewed image in keeping with the garden, and expanding the exhibition area.

The proposal by architect Kengo Kuma and landscape architect Vladimir Djurovic was distinguished by the creation of a giant canopy along the entire southern façade of the building. This architectural element is called Engawa in Japan, the space of the relationship between the building and the Garden.

On this exclusive visit to Cartão Gulbenkian Mais, we’ll revisit the CAM building and learn about the transformation it has undergone.
