Rediscovering CAM – its transformation by Kuma and Djurovic

Event Slider

On this visit, we will revisit the CAM building and look more closely at the transformation it has undergone.

In 2019, after the Foundation acquired a plot of land between the Centro de Arte Moderna and Rua Marquês de Fonteira, a competition was launched to find ideas to extend the Garden and renovate the Centro de Arte Moderna. The competition programme included the remodelling of the CAM building, adapting it to its new central position, the creation of a revitalised image in harmony with the garden, and the extension of the exhibition area.

The proposal by architect Kengo Kuma, with landscape architect Vladimir Djurovic, stands out for the creation of a giant canopy along the whole south façade of the building, an architectural element known in Japan as Engawa – a point of connection between the building and the Garden.
