Rediscover CAM – the architecture work

Cartão Gulbenkian Mais programme

On this exclusive visit to Cartão Gulbenkian Mais holders, we will revisit the CAM building, guided by architect Lourenço Andrade, one of the architects on the design team, and learn about its transformation.

In 2019, after the Foundation acquired an extension of land between the Modern Art Center and Marquês de Fonteira Street, a competition for ideas was launched to expand the Garden and renovate the Modern Art Center. The competition program included remodeling the CAM building, adapting it to its new central location, creating a renewed image in line with the garden, and expanding the exhibition area.

The proposal by architect Kengo Kuma and landscape architect Vladimir Djurovic stood out for the creation of a giant pala along the entire south facade of the building, an architectural element that in Japan is called Engawa – the space of relationship between the building and the Garden.
