Firstly with Canções Heróicas by Lopes-Graça, in the 1940s, and later with the protest songs of the 1960s and 1970s interconnected with student demonstrations and opposition to the Colonial War and the dictatorship, the struggle for democracy found its own mobilising voice. With songs by José Afonso, Carlos Paredes, José Mário Branco, Sérgio Godinho and Fausto, among others.
