Auditorium 2 Calouste Gulbenkian FoundationBeyond its profound political, economic and social impact, the participation of Portugal in World War I intrinsically shaped every domain of Portuguese cultural life and beginning with the daily practices and representations of artistic and literary creativity. This colloquium analyses and discusses the effects of the conflict on Literature, the Arts, Music, Theatre and Cinema while also extending to the political thinking prevailing, the religious sphere, behaviours and mentalities. Within the scope of the Jardim de Verão programming, the colloquium is complemented by the exhibition “And everything falls apart: The Cultural Impacts of the Great War on Portugal”, with staged readings, concerts and the “Images of the Great War” cinema cycle.
