Entrance Calouste Gulbenkian MuseumLUNGO DROM means ‘long journey’ in Romani and this is the idea behind the creation of a Nomadic Museum, which encourages reflection on the history and culture of Roma communities in Portugal and, in particular, in the Alto Alentejo region.
The collection of this museum is shown to the public through objects created in artistic residencies in Portalegre, by different artists and communities. The animated film by Margooo starts by making us feel the weight of the pairs of shoes we wear, in a story about prejudice, created together with pupils from Assentos School. The journey finishes as we listen to a radio piece by Mariana Bragada/Meta: o Caracol Serafim transporta a sua casa (Seraphim the Snail carries his house).
Why are the Roma nomadic? Breaking down the clichés and focusing on what we still have to learn, from piece to piece, from ceramics to music, from digital photography to dance, with packs of cards and books, this museum is a gesture of convergence and friendship.
Lungo Drom project is promoted by Um Coletivo – Associação Cultural and funded by PARTIS & Art for Change.

Through interdisciplinary artistic practices, LUNGO DROM seeks to build a long road in the form of a Nomadic Museum, in the hope of lessening the long-standing rifts between majority society and the Roma community in the Alto Alentejo region.
Developed by UMCOLETIVO – Associação Cultural in partnership with the Romani association Sílaba Dinâmica, the project involves working directly with children and young people from the José Régio school cluster, the Portalegrense Workers Cooperative, the Portalegre Polytechnic Institute and Banda Euterpe, as well as artists from different disciplines carrying out residencies in the area. The challenge of creating this museum involved getting to know the history of the Roma and seeking out the intimacy of each piece, made by invited artists, to find the link necessary for extensive and deep reflection, breaking down prejudices associated with the term Romani.
