Studio Centro de Arte Moderna GulbenkianEscola do Largo runs theatre workshops at the P. Amadeu Pinto Youth Centre in Pragal. They recognise that imagination, teamwork and role-play are vital for self-discovery and personal growth.
During the final year of the Ser é a Questão (To be or not to be, that is the question) project, the Escola do Largo theatre group worked on William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Rehearsals were based on their own understanding of the classic, resulting in somewhat dissected and crazy production with a more open approach.
Morreu e Julieta was created in collaboration with the children and young people of the Padre Amadeu Pinto Youth Centre and the residents of Bairro Branco, based on a text by Jacinto Lucas Pires, with staging by Marcos Barbosa. This play challenges prejudice, division and hatred, offering hope and the potential for change, and encouraging a new sense of community spirit.
After the performance, there will be a Q&A session with the audience.
The Ser é a Questão project is an initiative of Escola do Largo and is sponsored by the PARTIS & Art for Change initiative.
About the project
The Ser é a Questão project aimed to contribute to the holistic development of two groups of children and young people from the Padre Amadeu Pinto Youth Centre in Monte da Caparica and the centre of Lisbon. As part of the project, participants were involved in creating a performance based on William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet. The project promoted self-esteem and self-knowledge, as well as social skills such as teamwork and building interpersonal relationships. It also encouraged respect for differences and cultivated an appreciation of theatre and artistic sensitivity through multidisciplinary artistic workshops.
