The conference that opens the Isto é PARTIS & Art for Change 2024 programme will bring together different projects with governance models that create space for the direct participation of citizens.
The first guest will be Saad Eddine Said, co-director of the Citizens in Power initiative, a non-profit organisation in the UK that seeks to co-create ways for citizens to lead decision-making and shape the future of society.
The next three panels will feature examples of projects that explore different methods of involving citizens in cultural dynamics, including participation, co-creation and decision-making. These include Largo Residências in Lisbon (with a guided tour on Sunday), the Bons Sons festival in Tomar, the Artemrede’s JAM! project, Trinity Community Arts in Bristol, and The Agency in the UK. Attendees will also have the opportunity to learn about the consultative and participatory processes in institutions such as the Municipality of Valongo and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s Modern Art Centre.

Alice Neto de Sousa
Alice Neto da Sousa is a poet and poetry reciter born in Portugal with roots in Angola. Author of the poem Março, chosen to inaugurate the official commemorations of the 50th anniversary of the 25 April Revolution, she seeks to “sharpen her tongue” on stage about emerging social issues – most noteworthy is her poem Poeta, which has soared around the world. In 2022, she was named by Bantumen as one of the one hundred most influential black personalities in Portuguese-speaking countries. She is currently a regular on the television programme Bem-Vindos on RTP Africa.

Andrew Westle
National Programme Manager for The Agency at Battersea Arta Centre, UK, he was Engagement Manager for the Manchester International Festival. His work includes research, arts practice for social transformation, performance, evaluation, writing and public health. An Australian, Andrew has lived in the UK for 6 years and has worked with a diverse range of organisations. He created popular podcast and web platform Delving into Dance, which has an international audience of over 40,000 people. Andrew holds a PhD in Fine Arts (Cultural Leadership) and was part of the Inaugural Cohort at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts. He is currently a Clore Fellow.

Daniela Vieitas
Daniela Vieitas was born in Viana do Castelo and has focused her work on theatre and on projects that combine human rights, art and participation. She is currently Youth Programming Manager at CAM – the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s Modern Art Centre.

Emma Harvey
Emma Harvey is CEO of Trinity Community Arts, a charity formed to manage the Trinity Centre, Bristol, UK, a grade II* listed building, community arts centre and independent live music venue. She has been with Trinity since 2007 and has a background in the charity sector and in visual arts. She is interested in localism, and developing inclusive spaces, platforms and technologies and is currently spearheading a recovery effort to save another listed building in Bristol and bring it back into use as a multi-use community arts hub in 2025.

Hugo Cruz
Hugo creates art in different environments (schools, prisons, social housing districts, municipal theatres, among others). He is co-founder of PELE and Nómada_Art & Public Space. He is a researcher and PhD student at CIIE-FPCE – University of Porto, and CHAIA – University of Évora. Hugo is Artistic Director of MIRA – Artes Performativas and MEXE – Encontro Internacional de Arte e Comunidade. He teaches at various national and international institutions and publishes in the field of art and community.

Lara Seixo Rodrigues
Lara studied architecture in Lisbon and Barcelona (FA-UTL and UPC-ESTAB), but has always been interested in other artistic areas, particularly urban art. The combination of this passion and pride in being from the mountains led to the creation of urban art festival WOOL | Covilhã Arte Urbana (since 2011). She has been part of the curation and production teams of various cultural actions and exhibitions across the country and was responsible for curating and organising the ATTERO exhibition by the artist Bordalo II (2017), which received over 27,000 visitors. Founder of the artistic intervention platform MISTAKER MAKER | Plataforma de Intervenção Artística (2014), Lara is a member of the Ibero-American Urban Art Network, the Periferias Centrais working group and, between 2018 and 2022, was a member of the Reflection Group on the Future of Portugal.

Leopoldina Fekyamãle
Leopoldina Fekyamãle (Namibe, Angola) is a feminist human rights activist. She is currently taking a master’s degree in Contemporary Myths: Literatures, Arts and Cultures at Universidade Nova de Lisboa and holds a degree in teaching Portuguese from ISCED-Huíla. She has dedicated herself to projects focused on making books accessible to everyone, especially those who cannot afford them. Leopoldina is the mentor and coordinator of Mbanje do Livro, a community library in Namibe, Angola. She was a literature teacher in Angola.

Luís Jerónimo
Luis is the Director of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s Equity Programme. Previously, he was Director of the Gulbenkian Sustainable Development Programme (2020-2022) and Director of the Gulbenkian Cohesion and Social Integration Programme (2018-2019). He began his career at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in 2006, developing and coordinating the Foundation’s social innovation and impact investment projects portfolio. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the European Venture Philanthropy Association (2018-2022). Luis holds a degree in Philosophy and completed the INSEAD Social Entrepreneurship Programme in 2013 and the General Management Programme at Cambridge University’s Judge Business School in 2015.

Marta Martins
Marta Martins is a Cultural Manager. She holds a law degree (FDUL), a postgraduate degree in Cultural Management in Cities (INDEG-ISCTE) and a Master’s degree in Cultural Studies (FCH-UCP). Since 2010 she has been the Executive Director of Artemrede, a cultural network with 18 years of activity and 18 members, in which she has been involved in strategic planning, cultural management and programming, and the design and coordination of inter-municipal and intersectoral projects. As a speaker, Marta participates in conferences and seminars on cultural policy and management.

Marta Silva
With a degree in dance and education sciences, Marta Silva has worked as a dancer, teacher and producer with different audiences and institutions in different social contexts. Over the past fifteen years she has enhanced her work as a cultural manager in the area of social intervention and local development. In 2012, she founded the cultural and social solidarity co-operative LARGO Residências, situated in Intendente (Lisbon), which received the Cultural Access Award in the area of social access, and a vote of praise from the Lisbon City Council in 2023.

Martin Essayan
Martin Sarkis Essayan, great-grandson of the founder Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian, was born in 1959. He has been a trustee of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation since 20 July 2005, having taken over from his father as head of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s UK branch and the Armenian Communities Department. He is also trustee of the Saint Sarkis Charity Trust set up by the founder to support two institutions of his creation: the St. Sarkis Church in London and the Gulbenkian Library in Jerusalem.

Miguel Atalaia
Miguel Atalaia (Cem Soldos, Tomar) is a graphic designer, editorial designer and Artistic Director of BONS SONS. He maintains a strong connection to associations, having been a member of the Board of Sport Club Operário de Cem Soldos since 2014, of which he was Chair for the 2020-2021 biennium. He is a disability rights activist and is part of Centro de Vida Independente, as a member of the Leiria Branch, and is a beneficiary of the pilot project of the same name – Independent Living – implemented in Portugal since 2019.

Paula Varanda
Paula holds a PhD in artistic studies from the Middlesex University of London and a bachelor’s degree from Escola Superior de Dança in Lisbon. She has published several scientific and cultural papers, most noteworthy her collaboration with the Público newspaper and the book Dançar é Crescer – Aldara Bizarro e o Projeto Respira (2012). Paula was Director General for the Arts (Ministry of Culture 2016-2018) and since 2019 has been a researcher at Instituto de História da Arte and a lecturer in the master’s degree course in Performing Arts (FCSH/NOVA). She has been at the helm of dance company Companhia Maior since 2020.

Saad Eddine Said
Saad Eddine Said is a curator who initiates and develops partnerships between communities, creatives, and institutions to reshape the future of towns and cities. His purpose is to re-think and re-imagine the potential of citizens as a societal foundation for leadership and decision-making. He is the CEO and Artistic Director of New Art Exchange Co-Director and Co-Founder of Citizens In Power and Co-Chair of Contemporary Visual Arts Network England.
