Maria Lamas and the book “As Mulheres do meu País”

Event Slider

Maria Lamas (1893-1983), journalist and writer, teacher and ethno-social researcher, translator and photographer, human and civic rights activist during the dictatorship, was one of the 20th century’s most prominent Portuguese women. Although she is known for her political commitment and activism during the Estado Novo regime (1930s–60s), which led to her imprisonment (1949, 1951 and 1953) and exile in Paris (1962–69), her literary and journalistic work is almost forgotten, and her photographic work has never been exhibited in Portugal until now.

This visit sheds light on this remarkable figure, exploring the exhibition As Mulheres de Maria Lamas (The Women of Maria Lamas), curated by Jorge Calado, which focuses on the photographic work Maria Lamas produced for her book As Mulheres do meu País, as well as showing prints by other photographers included in the book, personal objects and first editions of her key books.
