Grand Auditorium Calouste Gulbenkian FoundationIt was probably between 1761 and 1765 that Joseph Haydn composed his Cello Concerto No. 1 for the cellist Joseph Weigl. The reasons for the disappearance of the score were unknown until 1961, when a copy was identified in the National Museum in Prague. In the programme that opens the new season, the soloist performing the work will be the young cellist Amalie Stalheim, one of today’s most promising performers. Conducted by Nuno Coelho, the concert also features the Scottish Symphony, one of Felix Mendelssohn’s orchestral masterpieces.
