Grande Colheita (The Great Harvest)

Isto é PARTIS & Art for Change 2024

A travelling show. Every place a stage, every stage a scene, every scene a different season.

Everything revolves around Persephone and Persephone revolves around herself, like the earth revolves around the sun, like the moon revolves around the earth, like the seasons revolve around the year, like everything is born, everything grows and everything dies.

Persephone is youth, the future, struggle, passion and the will to live. She is the search for beauty and the need to dream.

The performance is a journey, which is a dance, which is a tasting, which is listening to nature. It is the product of three years of exploration, fun, work and creation. An open-air performance that can be presented in any of the four seasons. The audience is guided by an unusual couple. Persephone, who is also Alice, who is also Filipa, is accompanied by her faithful and hasty companion, the White Rabbit, who is also Raphael. On the journey, which is also a fall, which is also an adventure, you will come across the most unlikely characters in the most unlikely situations.

In three different locations, three performances, accompanied by three tastings, three soups made with ingredients grown in Demeter’s Garden, three recipes created by the actor-cooks.

What if a vegetable garden were also a stage?

The gathering point of the Horta de Deméter project, supported by the 1st edition of the PARTIS & Art for Change initiative, is in the community gardens of the Quinta da Cruz estate, in Viseu. On two plots of ancestral land, the young Horta de Deméter participants create and look after a special garden that produces cabbages and beans, maize and courgettes, strawberries and sunflowers. But there are other things that also grow in the garden. It is the stage for theatre and music rehearsals and performances. A statuesque space and a constantly growing set.

The young horticulturist-artists participating in Horta de Deméter gather together once a week in this special place. After digging, planting, watering and weeding, in short, getting their hands dirty, the group dedicates itself to artistic creation. Theatre and music games and exercises help everyone feel part of the group and pave the way for creating theatrical performances or lyrics, rhythms and melodies for songs and much more. The young people are the ones who decide what they’re going to work on, what stories they want to tell, what questions they want to ask, and what themes they want to explore.

The show Grande Colheita is the culmination of this project, but more important than the destination is the journey the participants embark on together. Horta de Deméter is a project where difference is celebrated: everyone is welcome.
