The exhibition highlights the significance of artistic and cultural exchanges driven by migration, as well as the reciprocal relationship between the UK and France, and the movement of artists between the USA and the UK.
By tracing these networks of contact and mutual influence, the project also acknowledges that Calouste Gulbenkian himself was a migrant, having left his homeland to establish his career in the UK.
This approach—focusing on the crucial role of migrants fleeing pogroms and the Nazi regime (including German, Austrian, Polish, and Russian artists) alongside the movement of artists between France, the USA, and the UK—is unprecedented outside the UK. It sheds light on key forces shaping British art while recovering the memory of overlooked artists and works. It also demonstrates the remarkable permeability of boundaries between themes, disciplines, cultures, peoples, and individuals.
The tour in Portuguese costs 100,00 € per group plus the exhibition ticket value and in other languages costs 120,00 € per group plus the exhibition ticket value. All tours must be booked at least two weeks in advance.
