The new Botanic Academy, a partnership with the UNESCO Chair in Ethnobotany, will be a space devoted to the discovery and study of the plants that fill the Gulbenkian Garden with life

This initiative offers the unique opportunity to explore the biological wealth of this space, through practical and theoretical sessions that help reveal its diversity.

The Botanic Academy proposes a path that links science to art and culture, unravelling the histories, characteristics and use of various species that compose the ecosystem of the garden and which we frequently see represented in works of art.

For each session, we invite a specialist with whom participants can deepen their knowledge of botany, learning to identify, care for and value plants as they explore the connections between nature and human creativity.

These sessions may include a visit to the Garden. Participants should bring appropriate clothing and footwear.

Programme

19 Nov / Carlos Vila-Viçosa

During this session, various scientific aspects related to the Quercus genus will be addressed, including its global and national distribution, evolutionary processes related to hybridization and species delimitation, as well as ecological adaptation, native species of Brazil, and the role of these trees in shaping the landscape, biodiversity conservation, and the natural and cultural history of Portugal.

18 Feb / Luís Mendonça de Carvalho

In this presentation, we will embark on a journey across mainland and insular Portugal, with the aim of rediscovering traditions and practices in which plants play a structuring role, both materially and symbolically. The itinerary will begin on Corvo Island and culminate in the Tagus Estuary, after crossing the country’s various historic regions.

18 Mar / Jorge Capelo

This session will cover the study of vascular plant communities in Macaronesia, exploring their phytosociological classification, environmental modeling of habitats and species, and implications for global conservation. Aspects of floristic diversity and methodological challenges in habitat ecology will be addressed.

13 May / Maria de Fátima Sousa e Silva

Based on the works of Theophrastus (Historia Plantarum and De Causis Plantarum), we will discuss the transformation of empirical knowledge about the plant world – applied to agriculture, food, medicine, and other fields – into scientific knowledge. We will talk about the difference between Pure Botany and Applied Botany, and the earliest formulations of environmental concerns identifiable in Antiquity.

24 jun / Olga Maria Duarte Silva

During the session, we will present some medicinal plants cultivated in the Gulbenkian Garden, highlighting their traditional uses and therapeutic importance. Using these specimens as a starting point, we will take a brief journey through the history of Pharmacognosy, from its classical origins to the scientific developments that support current research.
