by Simon Bill

Out of dialogues between artists and scientists, there result works that deepen and interconnect the two fields. Simon Bill shares his experiences as the resident artist at the Gulbenkian Institute of Science and speaks about the impact of his daily activities at the Institute, the contact with science and the dialogue with scientists, on the works of art he produced there: Op-art oil paintings (from the optical art expression), a visual artistic style that applies optical illusions as a theme in the neuro-psychology of visual perception.

Simon Bill is an artist and writer. He studied at Central St. Martins and in the Royal College of Art, in London. His novel “Artist in Residence”, about a dissolute painter who discovered redemption and success as a resident artist in a neurology clinic was published in 2016. His most recent exhibition, at the BALTIC Contemporary Art Centre, presented his characteristic oval paintings, identical in shape and form but widely diversified in style and theme. In 2016, Simon became the resident artist at the Gulbenkian Institute of Science.
