Agora nascíamos outra vez (Now we are reborn)

Companhia Maior challenged choreographer Aldara Bizarro to create something new that reflected on the future, at a time when the young people of today will be the age of their grandparents.

The creation is based on the imagination of the dance company’s ensemble and on their understanding of and how they feel about the crises plaguing the world today, which pose a threat to us and demand action. Agora Nascíamos Outra Vez is a dance fiction embodying multiple perspectives and converging events, with texts by Patrícia Portela, music by Noiserv, set design by Fernando Brízio, and lighting designed by Daniel Worm.

After residencies and meetings with young people and seniors in Guimarães, Cartaxo, Lisbon and Viseu, Companhia Maior presents this new creation for the first time at Isto é PARTIS & Art for Change 2024.

“Here I am, naked, imagining that my granddaughter is older than me. I hear her commenting on the future I have jeopardised. I go over what I did each day, what I still have to do… and just as I’m about to ask her a question, she interrupts me and says:

‘Yes, it is still worth it. Because in the future, there will always be a future if you are present in the now.’

I wondered. Do I still have time?

‘There’s always time,’ my granddaughter replied there from the future, older than I am today. ‘Shall we get started?’

‘How?’

‘Close your eyes.’

I closed my eyes.

‘Now take my hand and we’ll link your past to my future.’

So I, a little younger than her, took my eldest granddaughter’s hand. I took a deep breath.

‘Now what?’”
