Rui Oliveira, lead researcher at the IGC – the Gulbenkian Science Institute, has been elected president of the Society for Social Neuroscience with his mandate beginning on 1st January.
The Society for Social Neuroscience was founded in the United States in 2010 with the objective of fostering research and investigation and applications in the field of social neuroscience. This field, in turn, studies the neuronal, cellular and genetic mechanisms underlying the structures that define the social and behavioural acts of species and human healthcare. Neuroscientists, psychologists, psychiatrists, engineers and neurologists are invited to engage in dialogue and share knowledge so as they may benefit from the work done in different scientific fields.
According to Rui Oliveira, his election to this role not only represents “a major responsibility” but also the “recognition of the work done in the emerging field of the neurosciences and that has taken place in Portugal”, where his laboratory in the IGC has been a pioneer. Rui Oliveira is also the dean of ISPA and an associated researcher at the Champalimaud Foundation.
