PROJETO 1952 | Archive in Motion: between the Neighbourhood and the Museum

Archive in Motion stems from a reflection on the visual archive of Portuguese colonialism held at the National Museum of Natural History and Science, which has been classified as ‘sensitive’ heritage.

The project involves students of various backgrounds and ages from the Qualifica Centre of the Baixa da Banheira/Vale da Amoreira School Group in the co-creation of multidisciplinary performances, with an emphasis on dance and movement. The creative process behind the performance encompasses somatic education, improvisation, choreographic composition, and imagery (working directly with photographs). The movement is inspired by the ‘untold’ stories of these bodies locked away in the archive, as well as their emotional and critical interpretation.

How should we look at this historical collection, revisit it in the present and reconstruct it in the future, in a process of reparation and healing so that the past may find its place of rest?

Project supported under the 3rd edition of the PARTIS & Art for Change initiative, promoted by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the ‘la Caixa’ Foundation.
