Sérgio Mah to become new director of CAM
Sérgio Mah will take up his duties in May 2026, succeeding Benjamin Weil, whose contract ends on 31 January next year.
Born in Mozambique in 1970, Sérgio Mah holds a degree in Sociology, a Master’s in Communication Sciences, and a PhD in Multimedia Art.
He teaches at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of NOVA University Lisbon and at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon. His research and writing focus on contemporary art, with particular emphasis on the practices and theories of the image. This year, his book Sentidos do Fotográfico was published by Documenta. He also co-authored the documentary series Entre Imagens, a project for RTP2 showcasing the work of 13 creators whose practice centres on photography.
Since 2006, Sérgio Mah has curated numerous solo and group exhibitions at institutions such as the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid), Fundación Mapfre (Madrid/Barcelona), and Jeu de Paume (Paris). He has also collaborated with the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s Delegation in France, curating several exhibitions including those of Alexandre Estrela (2019) and Manuela Marques (2014).
Between 2003 and 2005, he was Artistic Director of the LisbonPhoto Biennial and later of PHotoEspaña (2008–2010). In 2001, he curated Portugal’s official representation at the 54th Venice Art Biennale, and, together with Nuno Brandão Costa, Portugal’s official representation at the 16th Venice Architecture Biennale (2018).
He became Deputy Director of MAAT – Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology – in June 2023, where he has curated several exhibitions, notably of artists such as Vivian Suter, Anthony McCall, Jeff Wall, Miriam Cahn (with João Pinharanda), and Cerith Wyn Evans.
