The 2025 Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity has received an unprecedented 212 nominations.

The Prize for Humanity has received a record number of nominations, highlighting its growing global impact and recognition. During the nomination period, 212 submissions were received from 115 nationalities across all five continents, underscoring the Prize’s growing profile. The winner of this prestigious award will be announced at a ceremony on 9 July 2025 in the Foundation’s Grand Auditorium.

Nominations spanned a diversity of candidates evidencing climate action in a range of fields from education and conservation to grassroots and activism. Notably, 62% of nominees are from the Global South, underlining the Prize’s commitment to encouraging applications that identify impactful climate action in regions most affected by environmental challenges. This broad representation reflects the Prize’s inclusive approach, celebrating those making significant progress in addressing climate change and inspiring hope and possibility across the world.

All nominations were submitted by third parties, with 56% of nominators from the Global North. Nominators come from various sectors, including academia, non-profit organisations, business and civil society, demonstrating a widespread commitment to recognising transformative environmental efforts.

The Jury, chaired by Angela Merkel, oversees a rigorous selection process, evaluating nominees based on their potential for long-term environmental and societal impact, leadership, scalability and innovation in addressing current and future challenges.

The Prize for Humanity continues to affirm its role as a key initiative in supporting and recognising solutions for a sustainable future. With this record-breaking number of nominations, the 2025 edition promises to highlight outstanding contributions that inspire action on a global scale.
