The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation is a private institution whose mission is to improve people’s quality of life through art, charity, science, and education. Based in Lisbon, with branches in Paris and London, the Foundation develops its work both in Portugal and internationally.

Gulbenkian’s Garden, designed in the 1960s by landscape architects António Viana Barreto and Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles, is one of the most iconic examples of Modernist landscape design in Portugal. Now classified as a National Monument, it remains a landmark in Portuguese landscape architecture.

We are currently seeking a Gardener to join our maintenance team and help preserve and care for the Gulbenkian Garden, ensuring it remains in excellent condition for all visitors.

Contract type: Permanent employment contract

Main responsibilities

  • Support the maintenance, conservation and cleaning of the Gulbenkian Garden.
  • Carry out pruning, planting, and plant propagation according to seasonal and identified needs.
  • Apply soil treatments and fertilisers, including compost, in line with the established schedule.
  • Maintain seeded and planted areas, including replanting, weeding, and mowing lawns and meadows.
  • Clean pavements, gutters, bins, water features, and manage garden waste.
  • Monitor and maintain the irrigation and drainage systems.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in good working order.
  • Apply pest and disease treatments using organic-approved products, following best practices in plant care.

Required skills and qualifications

  • Secondary education (12th grade).
  • Professional training in gardening or a related area (preferred).
  • At least 1 year of relevant experience.
  • Familiarity with gardening tools and machinery.
  • Good knowledge of plants and gardening techniques.
  • Fluency in Portuguese.
  • Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills.
