Scholarships for Arts Training Abroad

These scholarships support academic and technical training in the arts abroad, including visual arts, dance, theatre, film and music.

Eligibility Conditions

Applications are open to Portuguese and foreign nationals who are resident in Portugal.

For academic training, scholarships are awarded for postgraduate courses and master’s degrees. Applicants must be aged 35 or under on 31 December 2026. Priority will be given to early-career applicants who begin their course from 1 September 2026 onwards.

For technical training and artistic development, scholarships support training projects aimed at specialisation, ongoing professional development and career advancement. There is no age limit for this category. Priority will be given to applicants whose training begins from 1 September 2026 onwards.

In the field of music, applications are only accepted for specialisations in orchestral instruments, voice and conducting.

Applications for undergraduate or doctoral degrees are not eligible.

Applications in the fields of Architecture and Urbanism, Design, Art History, Heritage and Archaeology are not accepted.

Scholarship Conditions

The scholarship covers:

  • A monthly allowance of €1,500 or €50 per day;
  • A one-off allowance of €1,000 to cover installation costs, applicable to programmes lasting more than three months;
  • Up to €500 towards travel expenses directly related to the training;
  • Up to €5,000 towards tuition fees, subject to the submission of proof of payment;
  • Personal accident travel insurance.

For academic training, scholarships are awarded for a minimum of three months and a maximum of 12 months. At the Gulbenkian Foundation’s discretion, the scholarship may be renewed for programmes lasting longer than 12 months, provided that the total duration of the scholarship, including renewals, does not exceed 24 months.

For technical training and artistic development, scholarships are awarded for a minimum of one week and a maximum of 12 months. As above, renewals may be granted at the Gulbenkian Foundation’s discretion for programmes lasting longer than 12 months, provided that the total duration of the scholarship does not exceed 24 months.

  • Registration is done by submitting an online form, in Portuguese.

  • Please consult the Regulations available in the documents area and check all eligibility criteria before submitting the application form.

  • To access the registration form you must first register on the website.

  • Fill in all mandatory fields to submit the application, including uploading the documentation required in the Regulations.

  • Avoid submitting your application in the last few days of the deadline to prevent possible difficulties.
