Master’s Scholarships for Students from PALOP

These scholarships support master's studies at Portuguese higher education institutions for nationals of the African Countries of Portuguese Official Language (PALOP) – Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, and São Tomé and Príncipe – in the fields of mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology.

Eligibility Conditions

  • Applicants must have permanent residence in their country of origin.
  • Applicants must be applying for a master’s degree (applications for integrated master’s programs will not be considered) in the fields of mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology
  • Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from a university in their country of origin, with a minimum grade average of 14 (on a scale of 0 to 20).
  • The maximum age for application is 30 years (applicants must have been born in or after 1996).

Scholarship Conditions

  • The maximum total duration of the scholarship is 24 months, renewable for the period specified in the study plan, up to the stated limit (Article 4 of the Call conditions, in Portuguese).
  • Monthly stipend of €1,150.
  • A one-time €1,150 allowance for relocation expenses in the first year of the master’s program.
  • Tuition fee support of up to €4,000, paid in two installments. Any amount exceeding this value will have to be borne by the scholar.
  • A one-time travel allowance between Portugal and the country of origin: Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau, €800; Angola, Mozambique, and São Tomé and Príncipe, €1,250.
  • Coverage for personal accident insurance during travel.

How to apply

  • Applications must be submitted exclusively by the candidate.
  • The selection process is managed by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, based in Lisbon, with an independent jury responsible for evaluating candidates.
  • Carefully review the Regulations available in the “Documents” section to verify the eligibility criteria and the mandatory documents required for submission.
  • Applications must be completed through an online form in Portuguese. To access the form, you must first register on the website (refer to the FAQ document in the “Documents” section for step-by-step instructions).
  • Ensure all required fields are properly filled in and upload all necessary documents as specified in the regulations.
  • Submit your application well in advance to avoid last-minute issues, especially when obtaining letters of recommendation.
  • The Gulbenkian Foundation will only respond to inquiries up to two business days before the submission deadline.
