Core Funding for Environmental Organizations
Documents
In Portugal, more than half of all existing habitats are showing signs of decline. Much of the essential work to preserve, manage, and restore ecosystems—and to improve the state of biodiversity—is carried out by environmental associations. Yet, like many NGOs across the country, these organisations face major challenges that make it difficult to sustain and expand their work. Nature conservation, as well as engaging and raising awareness in the communities where these organisations operate, requires long-term commitment and consistent funding.
Recognising the vital public role these organisations play in protecting the environment and safeguarding natural heritage, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation is offering core funding (also known as structural funding) to Environmental NGOs (ENGOs). This initiative will test core funding as an alternative support model for the third sector.
Unlike project-based grants, core funding is designed to strengthen the overall capacity of ENGOs and increase the long-term impact of their conservation efforts. This type of support allows organisations to operate in a more sustainable, flexible, and continuous way.
Eligibility Criteria
Applications are open to organisations that are officially recognised as ENGOs or equivalent under the National Register, as well as to those working in nature conservation whose mission aligns with the aims of this funding call and who meet the criteria set out in the programme guidelines.
Funding Conditions
Up to six organisations will be selected. Funding amounts will be determined during the selection process, with a maximum of €50,000 per organisation.
