Based on a play written by Gore Vidal, the drama The Best Man details the political maneuvering behind the nomination of presidential candidates.

Secretary of State William Russell and Senator Joe Cantwell are candidates for the US presidential nomination from the same party. Cantwell is willing to do anything to achieve his goal, while Russell sees himself as a man of principle.

Both try to win the support of the current President, who considers that neither has what it takes to run the country, triggering a fierce power struggle.
