Led by artist Somayeh Gholami, the session introduces the fundamentals of the Arabic alphabet and the principles of calligraphic construction in styles such as Persian and Kufic.
A practical and creative experience, it reveals how writing became both an art form and a symbol of cultural identity in the Islamic world.
Workshop materials are provided by the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum.
Biographies

Somayeh Gholami
Somayeh Gholami moved to Portugal in 2009 after receiving a doctoral scholarship from the University of Coimbra, where she completed her PhD in Applied Mathematics in 2013. She also holds a Master’s degree in Calligraphy for Naskh and Ketabat from the Society of Iranian Calligraphists (2006).
Her passion, experience, and dedication to the art of calligraphy have enabled her to express her imagination through her compositions, using form, colour, and texture to convey diverse concepts. She presents her work in both solo and group exhibitions, as well as through lectures and workshops.
