This series of lunchtime tours offers an in-depth look at a single work of art.
In the Museum, every work of art deserves a long pause and a slow look.
Lasting 20 minutes and in a small group, each tour examines one object from the collection.
What makes this piece irreplaceable? How has it survived the passage of time?
Each month a different work is in the spotlight, with the chance to see it on two separate Wednesdays.
Programme
14 and 28 Oct / Egyptian Mask
A supreme symbol of Egyptian art, the funerary mask collected by Calouste Gulbenkian reveals the technical and spiritual splendour of Ancient Egypt. More than a portrait, it represents an ideal of perfection meant to accompany the deceased into eternity.
11 and 25 Nov / Vase with birds in flight
The largest known vase of its type and unique in its decoration, this extraordinary work in enamelled glass reveals a celestial cosmos peopled by real and mythical birds. Its iconography evokes The Conference of the Birds, the celebrated mystical poem by the Persian poet ‘Attar.
02 and 16 Dec / The Break-Up of the Ice by Monet
In the winter of 1880, an extraordinary thaw on the Seine inspired Claude Monet to paint a series of landscapes. In this work the painter captures the force of nature and brings together fundamental Impressionist principles, which will be examined during the tour.
13 and 27 Jan / Greek Vase
A supreme example of ancient Greek pottery, the calyx krater was used on festive occasions to serve wine to guests. Its painted scenes tell us more about ceremonies, myths and customs some 2,400 years old.
10 and 24 Feb / Les Bretonnes au Pardon
Awarded a prize at the Paris Salon of 1889, this painting is a remarkable example of the way Dagnan-Bouveret used photography as a working tool, creating compositions that reflected a fresh understanding of the relationship between people and nature.
03 and 17 Mar / The ‘Portuguese’ carpet
The carpet commonly known as the ‘Portuguese’ carpet is today associated with the textile production of Safavid Iran, a period that saw the manufacture and circulation of luxury textiles at its height. Textiles played a central role in Persian culture and became one of the principal exports of the age.
