CAM renovation project

Event Slider

On this visit we will revisit the CAM building and learn about the transformation it has undergone.

In 2019, after the Foundation acquired an extension of land between the Modern Art Center and Marquês de Fronteira street, a competition for ideas was launched to expand the Garden and renovate the Modern Art Center.

The competition program included the remodeling of the CAM building, adapting it to its new central location, creating a renewed image in line with the garden, and expanding the exhibition area.

The proposal by architect Kengo Kuma, with landscape architect Vladimir Djurovic, was unique in that it created a giant canopy along the entire southern façade of the building, an architectural element that in Japan is called Engawa.

Its complex design involved the joint work of a vast team of architects, engineers, numerous specialists from different areas and consultants, with laboratory trials and tests and the construction, in full scale, of a model to test the solutions recommended in the project.

All tours must be booked at least two weeks in advance. The visit in Portuguese costs 100,00 € per group and in other languages costs 120,00 € per group.

Duration: 90 min. Participants: 10 – 25 Language: Portuguese / English
