In the 1960s, the Gulbenkian Garden was a pioneer for its completely innovative way of creating gardens in Portugal.
In the city centre, creating a garden partially on a slab, which works with the rules of landscape and life, implies specific maintenance strategies, of which we would highlight: working in synergy with nature itself, integrating the spontaneous emergence of some vegetation, and the natural cycles of growth and death of plants; incorporating strategies for capturing and recirculating rainwater for irrigation, while installing biodiverse meadows, more resistant to drought and disease; accepting the natural forms of vegetation, without pruning it for purely aesthetic purposes, thus respecting the natural way vegetation distributes itself in the landscape, according to geographical and microclimate conditions.
