Location
Engawa Space Centro de Arte Moderna GulbenkianThe exhibition consists of a multichannel video installation entitled ‘Chorus in Rememory of Flight,’ and is the result of a project that took the artist to seven European port cities with strong links to colonial history: Lisbon, Antwerp, Barcelona, Hamburg, Liverpool, Marseille and Rotterdam, where for a year, Julianknxx collaborated with local choirs, politicians, dancers and activists, bringing together performances and testimonies that gave rise to the films presented.
Addressing topics such as the colonial heritage, loss and belonging, Julianknxx (a multidisciplinary artist from Sierra Leone) works on the boundaries between written words, music and visual arts. Drawing on his own story, the artist seeks to deconstruct prejudices about African art, history and culture, working on the black experience of constructing and reconstructing identities, rejecting labels and creating new collective narratives.
