Room 2 Calouste Gulbenkian FoundationThe value of scientific research and interdisciplinary collaboration between museums, universities, and laboratories – as a means to study and enhance cultural heritage – sets the theme for this conference, which seeks to strengthen the link between the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and the Academy.
The programme brings together experts and representatives from national and international universities and specialised laboratories, all of whom have research backgrounds related to cultural heritage studies. Comprising two panels, the event aims to identify various scientific approaches that support and inform the best strategies and decisions for preserving both movable and immovable heritage.
A selection of works of art from the Gulbenkian Collection has undergone a series of examinations aimed at characterising their material composition, confirming their authenticity, dating and provenance, recording their state of conservation, and supporting any necessary conservation and restoration work. The presentations will share some of these studies, carried out using specialised technology in combination with Artificial Intelligence, as part of a joint exercise in peer-to-peer knowledge sharing and public engagement.
This event will feature Portuguese-English simultaneous interpretation.

António Candeias
António Candeias holds a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Évora and is a full professor in the Chemistry Department of the same university. Director of the HERCULES Laboratory and Coordinator of the CityUMacau Chair in Sustainable Heritage at the University of Évora. Director of the project IN2PAST, the E-RIHS.pt infrastructure, and the China-Portugal Joint Laboratory for Heritage Conservation Science.

Inês Coutinho
Assistant Professor in the Department of Conservation and Restoration at NOVA FCT, responsible for the areas of Glass and Ceramic Conservation and Restoration, History of Glass and Ceramics, and Heritage Conservation and Sustainability. Her research focuses on the history of glass production in Portugal, from the Roman era to the Industrial Revolution, linking material culture to social rituals. She has authored over 40 publications on innovative methodologies for the study of historical glass.

Luiz Antonio Cruz Souza
He holds a PhD in Chemistry from the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte. Professor at the School of Fine Arts at the same university, leading LACICOR – Conservation Science Laboratory. Deputy director of CECOR – Centre for the Conservation and Restoration of Movable Cultural Heritage. His research focuses on the application of science and technology to the conservation and restoration of cultural heritage, with expertise in analysis, preventive conservation, risk management, and sustainability.

Maria João Revez
Conservator-restorer and researcher at the company Nova Conservação, with a focus on risk management for cultural heritage and conservation theory.
She holds a PhD in Conservation and Restoration of Heritage from NOVA University Lisbon. She is an Assistant Professor at the School of Arts at the Catholic University of Portugal and a researcher at the Centre for Research in Science and Technology for the Arts (CITAR) at the same university.

Rui Xavier
He is the senior coordinator for Preventive Conservation and the conservator responsible for the Oriental lacquerware and Japanese prints in the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum. He trained in Interior architecture and holds a postgraduate qualification in Museology and Conservation, with a specialisation in lacquer conservation. He is an active member of ICOM-CC and serves as a consultant in Preventive Conservation for external projects involving new museums.

Sílvia Pereira
She holds a PhD in Chemistry from Delft University of Technology and is a researcher at the Heritage Conservation Unit for Natural and Built Environments at LNEC. Author of several publications on architectural ceramics, with a particular focus on historic tiles. Lead researcher for the CerAzul project (Evaluation and Development of Materials and Techniques for the Conservation of Historic Tiles) and the ongoing AI4AZ project (Artificial Intelligence for the Safeguarding of Tile Heritage).

Sara Valadas
She holds a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Évora. She was part of the José de Figueiredo Laboratory from 2007 to 2010. Since 2010, she has been a researcher and member of the HERCULES Laboratory. She is affiliated with the CityUMacau Chair in Sustainable Heritage and the IN2PAST laboratory. She has participated in various projects, including the study of the Altarpiece of Funchal Cathedral, the Old Goa Revelations, SCREAM, E-RIHS.pt, and the Saint Vincent Panels Intervention and Study.

Susana Campos
Coordinator of the Remedial Conservation and Restoration Department at the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum.She is a conservator-restorer, with a pre-Bologna degree in Conservation and Restoration from the Faculty of Science and Technology, NOVA University Lisbon. Specialising in easel painting, her professional experience has been primarily developed in museum settings, where she has coordinated several internships and conservation projects.

Teresa Diaz Gonçalves
Researcher at the Natural and Built Heritage Conservation Unit, which is part of the Materials Department at LNEC. She holds a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Lisbon. Recipient of the Manuel Rocha Research Award from LNEC in 2013. Her research focuses on the development of eco-friendly materials for the circular economy, the degradation of porous materials, and the conservation of architectural heritage. Lead researcher for the DRYMASS and EVINCA25 projects

Yacy-Ara Froner
PhD in Economic History from the University of São Paulo. Professor at the School of Fine Arts and the School of Architecture at the Federal University of Minas Gerais. She holds a specialisation in restoration from CECOR – Centre for Conservation and Restoration and in collection conservation from the Getty Conservation Institute. Consultant in the fields of Art History, History of Collections, and Preventive Conservation. Researcher at LACICOR – Laboratory of Conservation Sciences.
