A theoretical and practical course on gemology applied to the decorative arts, focusing on the identification and characterization of materials such as gemstones, ivory, glass, or plastics in a museum context.

The scientific and museological value of the materials used in jewellery and the decorative arts is increasingly recognised. Among these are gemstones, hardstones, biogenic substances (such as ivory or tortoiseshell), and even artificial products (glass, plastics, or synthetic stones).

In this theoretical and practical course, led by gemologist Rui Galopim de Carvalho, we will examine how the characterisation of these materials impacts different areas of museum work; why their correct identification, using the terminology of both material sciences and the decorative arts, is essential; and the challenges of gathering data given the particular limitations of the objects and their contexts.

Using case studies from the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and other institutions, the course will reveal the processes behind gemological studies applied to the decorative arts.

This course is not certified. Attendance statements will be issued.
