At the inaugural lecture of the Gulbenkian Institute for Advanced Studies, David Nirenberg reflects on the role of these institutions as spaces for intellectual experimentation and dialogue across disciplines.

David Nirenberg, Director of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, will deliver the inaugural lecture of the Gulbenkian Institute for Advanced Study.

A historian and medievalist, Nirenberg will reflect on the role of institutes for advanced study as spaces for intellectual experimentation, sustained inquiry, and conversation across disciplines.

The Gulbenkian Institute for Advanced Study is an independent institute established in 2025 by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. It supports the work of world-class communities of fellows for limited periods of time, usually between three and nine months, in a congenial intellectual environment, with few regular obligations. Fellows receive a stipend and accommodation.

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation reserves the right to collect and keep records of images, sounds and voice for the diffusion and preservation of the memory of its cultural and artistic activity. For further information, please contact us through the Information Request form.
