Location
Lower Gallery Calouste Gulbenkian FoundationPastoral scenes enjoyed great success in 18th century painting, depicting the idealised and fictionalised lives of shepherds and peasants in country landscapes. With origins dating back to Classical Antiquity, this theme was reinvented by the painter François Boucher and widely reproduced in engravings, tapestries and even small gold objects.
During this visit, curator André Afonso will address this fascinating theme, analysing pieces from the Gulbenkian Collection, such as drawings, engravings, porcelain and jewellery, and establishing relationships with other artistic manifestations that were also particularly attuned to this pastoral aesthetic, such as literature and music.
