Catarina Sobral is the author and illustrator of the first book in this children's series titled “Heroines of the Arts.”

CAM – Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian and Tinta-da-china have teamed up to create the “Heroines of the Arts.” children’s book series, a collection for everyone who believes that heroines exist. Inspired by CAM’s modern and contemporary art collectio, these books tell stories of brave, adventurous, bold, and fearless women who, through art, transform the world.

The first book is dedicated to Madalena Perdigão, a key figure in Portuguese cultural history, who created the Gulbenkian Choir, Orchestra, and Ballet in the 1960s. Later, in 1984, she established ACARTE – the Animation, Artistic Creation and Education by Art Service, and the CAI – Children’s Artistic Center at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, following the opening of CAM in 1983.

After the presentation by Guilherme d’Oliveira Martins, board member of the Gulbenkian Foundation, there will be a reading by the author, followed by a book signing session.

On June 2, a comic book workshop titled “Restless Super-heroines” will be held for children in the Open-Air Amphitheatre of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Garden, led by Catarina Sobral.

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation reserves the right to collect and keep records of images, sounds and voice for the diffusion and preservation of the memory of its cultural and artistic activity. For further information, please contact us through the Information Request form.
