SYNOPSIS

A documentary about the work of Carlos Nogueira. The film follows the fundamental stages involved in the preparation of a series of exhibitions: the conception, the definition and transformation of the materials, and the installation of the sculptural elements.

Luís Miguel Correia was born in 1977 in Santa Iria de Azóia, Portugal. He completed a degree in Media Studies/Film at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Nova University of Lisbon. He has directed two documentaries about Portuguese artists produced by FCSH-NOVA’s Laboratory of Cinematographic Creation (LABCC) and funded by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation: Fernando Calhau - Work in Progress (2001) and Out of the Nature of Things (2003) about the sculptor Carlos Nogueira. He attended the Gulbenkian’s Creativity and Artistic Production Programme’s Filmmaking Course and Cinema Scriptwriting Course, both organised in association with the London Film School. He directed the short fiction film O Dedo [The Finger] (2005) as part of the former, followed by the short fiction film Estação [Season] (2007) produced by Raiva. He has directed a documentary about another Portuguese artist, Pedro Calapez – Trabalhos do Olhar [Works of the Gaze] (2009) for Midas Filmes and Crónica Parisiense [Parisian Chronicle] (2012) produced by Terratreme, based on an episode in the life of the Portuguese composer Fernando Lopes-Graça. He has also worked as an editor, cameraman, scriptwriter and assistant director on other films, collaborating with the directors Manuel Mozos, Pedro Caldas, Susana Nobre, João Rosas and Pedro Pinho, among others. He is currently completing the documentary project Santa Iria, which is in post-production.

Luís Alves de Matos has a degree in directing from the Lisbon Theatre and Film School (Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema). He has collaborated on different contemporary production projects since 1993 and since then has directed a number of documental films about Portuguese artists. In 2001 he founded the production company Amatar Filmes to continue with the production and direction of documentaries in the field of contemporary art.
